Two Way Inn
About This Spot
Stepping into Two Way Inn is like crossing a quiet threshold into Detroit's past, where time slows down and stories settle into the worn wood and low-lit corners. This laidback bar welcomes you with an unpretentious warmth that invites lingering conversations, clinking glasses, and the soft hum of history echoing just beneath the surface. It’s a place where the pace is gentle, allowing visitors to soak in an atmosphere shaped by generations of locals and the gentle weight of memory.
Once a town hall, post office, and even a jail, the building’s layered history quietly infuses every shadow and creak, offering a sense of place that feels both grounded and quietly mysterious. The old rotary phone booth tucked in the side adds a nostalgic charm, while a pool table beckons those seeking a simple game among friends. It’s not a spot for pretense or haste — instead, it’s a haven for those who appreciate the relaxed authenticity of a true neighborhood watering hole.
The drink selection is classic and straightforward, favoring well-loved staples like crisp beers and a hearty Bloody Mary that perfectly suits the easygoing vibe. The food mirrors this simplicity with comforting dishes that echo home-cooked care—think tender meatloaf sandwiches or a rich Irish cottage pie—that feel more like a friend’s generous offering than a formal menu. The kitchen sometimes surprises with soups that bring a genuine taste of local hospitality, deep and filling enough to match the bar’s quiet soul.
Patrons often remark on the genuine friendliness here, where bartenders do more than pour drinks—they connect, invite stories, and create an atmosphere that stays with you long after you've left. Whether you’re joining locals or passing through as an out-of-towner, Two Way Inn extends a genuine welcome beneath its softly glowing lights.
If you're searching for a place where history, warmth, and an unvarnished sense of community come together, this tucked-away Detroit dive bar holds a quietly compelling invitation to slow down, listen, and savor the moment.

No food menu other than a soup of the day made by the barmaids mother. Whatever she feels like cooking, the day we visited is split pea, and not a fan of peas, this was loaded with chunks of ham and potatoes. Very stick to your ribs soup. A shot and a beer rounded out the “meal” the bartender was super friendly even had us sign her up”out of towners” book as we were from Alabama. When you search dive bar this is a go too place. Don’t let the doorbell deter you, or the seedy neighborhood. Stop in and see the “Oldest Bar in Detroit”

I enjoyed the old style the bar has. We went here on the Drunks of Antiquity bus tour, so it was a fun stop while learning the history of the place.

Prepare to be transported back in time and immersed in the enchanting ambiance of this hidden gem—a bar that effortlessly combines history, charm, and a laid-back atmosphere. As I stepped into its doors, I felt an immediate sense of warmth and familiarity, as if I had stumbled upon a well-kept secret known only to those seeking an extraordinary experience. Nestled within the walls of this establishment are countless tales that trace back to the year 1876, painting a vivid picture of a bygone era. Whispers of a haunting linger in the air, adding an intriguing layer to the already captivating setting. Although I didn't encounter any otherworldly encounters during my visit, the allure of the bar's historical mystique certainly left me captivated. One of the highlights of my evening was the plethora of entertainment options that awaited me. From classic board games to engaging rounds of checkers, pool, and even pinball, there was never a dull moment. It was a testament to the thoughtful curation of activities, providing ample opportunities for patrons to unwind and engage in friendly competition. However, it wasn't just the fascinating history or the captivating ambiance that made this bar truly exceptional—it was the exceptional service provided by a bartender named Danielle. Her expertise and passion for mixology shone through as she skillfully crafted a myriad of delightful concoctions. Among her memorable recommendations was a tantalizing Michigan cherry vodka creation, whose name eludes me in this very moment. Rest assured, though, its exquisite flavor left an indelible impression. In this establishment, one can't help but feel transported to the era of speakeasies and clandestine rendezvous. The subtle hints of that era's allure are unmistakable, gently guiding you through an unforgettable evening. It's a place that effortlessly marries the past with the present, granting each visitor a unique experience that can't be found elsewhere. For those who appreciate the rich tapestry of history, this bar is a treasure trove waiting to be explored. Whether you're a history buff or simply seeking a low-key date night in Detroit, this establishment promises an enthralling journey. Allow yourself to be enveloped by the echoes of the past, the laughter of fellow patrons, and the clacking of billiard balls as you savor each moment. As I bid farewell, I knew without a doubt that I would return to this extraordinary bar, eager to reconnect with the congenial atmosphere and perhaps challenge a friend to a game of pool. It is a place where memories are forged, laughter is shared, and time seems to stand still—a testament to the enduring allure of this remarkable establishment. Make sure to pay them a visit and discover the magic for yourself. Prepare to be transported, for this bar is more than just a place—it is an experience that will linger in your heart long after you've left.

Bar of Legend; those hallowed floors moaning secrets Holding spirits within its wooden embrace. Awesome Service, the platinum status of any DiveBar I've ever walked into.. from the OG rotary-phonebooth to even having a pool table.. NOT for the pinkie-in-the-air or wine drinker type of establishment.. absolute must!! visit for the authentic dive and historic bar connoisseur. Need to come back n hang with the cool bartender n maybe a ghost or 2

Apparently the oldest continuouly operating tavern in the State of Michigan. Does not have a beer tap. Lots of interesting decorations.

If you are reading reviews for Two Way Inn you know what you are looking for and this is it. Exactly as its reputation suggests - a local, family run pub with cheap drinks, friendly service and tons of character & history. Apparently they have some homemade (literally) food 1 or 2 days a week that sounded like a great bargain. During my visit a local came in with some fresh pies and I was offered a slice. A must visit for sure.
